Integration of Heaven and Man(天人合一)

Introduction

Integration of heaven and Man (IOHAM) is generally thought to be a Chinese Daoist philosophy, teaching people to “live in harmony with nature.” In reality, integration of Heaven and Man is not just a proverb and philosophy of living; it is the practice of living. The Chinese hermits and Daoist monks practiced IOHAM dated back to thousands of years ago.

The basic theory of IOHAM was found in the book Yi Jing（易经）, one of the oldest book in China. The idea of IOHAM was subsequently mentioned in the Emperor’s Nei Jing or Emperor’s Canon of Internal Medicine (《黄帝内经》) and by different renowned philosophers. Chapter 75 of Emperor’s Nei Jing pointed out that man should “…correspond with Heaven and earth, correlate with the four seasons and unify with Heaven and earth.” (“与天地相应，与四时相副，人参天地”)[1] In Qi Wu Lun (《齐物论》)，Zhuang Zi（庄子）, a legendary Daoist living between 369 A.D. and 286 A.D. said, “Heaven and earth coexist with me, all things and I are one.” （“天地与我并生，而万物与我为一”）[2] In West Han Dynasty, Dong Zhong Shu, (董仲舒) a renowned Confucian (179 A.D.一104 A.D.) also clearly stated in his writing that “…between Heaven and man, integration into one.”（天人之际，合而为一）[3]

The earliest record of this 4 letters proverb tiān rèn hé yī (天人合一) “Integration of Heaven and Man” was found in the book Zheng Meng（《征蒙》）[4] by Zhang Zai (张载) (1020-1077)，a renowned philosopher in the North Song Dynasty.

Zhang Zai’s description on IOHAM was challenged by Cheng Yi（程颐）(1033-1107) and his brother Cheng Hao (程颢) (1032-1085). In chapter 6 of their book “He Nan Cheng”s Posthumous Papers” (《河南程氏遗书》), Cheng’s brothers said, “There is no difference between heaven and man, it is not needed to talk about integration.” (“天人本无异，不必言合。”)[5] Simply, what Cheng’s brothers meant is: there is no need to talk about integration because man is already an integral part of heaven (the universe).

Where is Heaven?

The dictionary meanings for Heaven is described as a place regarded in various religions as the abode of God (or the gods) and the angels, and of the good after death, often traditionally depicted as being above the sky.[6] Heaven is also defined as the expanse of space that seems to be over the earth like a dome: firmament[7]. Both definitions implied that Heaven is something high above and far beyond reach.

However, if we put the spiritual aspect aside, i.e. Gods and angels, and look into the larger picture of Heaven or the synonym of Heaven, universe, we will obtain an entirely different interpretation and understanding of Heaven.

What is universe (Heaven)? Universe is defined as: all existing matter and space considered as a whole; the cosmos.[8] From this definition we learned that universe (Heaven) is one big family composing of all matters, antimatters, dark matters, energies, dark energy, Milky Way, galaxies, solar systems, planets, non-living matters and living matters including man. In short, the planet earth and men are not isolated entities; they are part of this bigger picture called universe. Instead of separating from Heaven by far beyond reached distance, human being is right in the heart of Heaven and acting as an integral part of Heaven. This is perhaps the reason why Zhuang Zi（庄子）said, “Heaven and earth coexist with me, all things and I are one.”（“天地与我并生，而万物与我为一”）and the Cheng’s brothers said, “There is no difference between heaven and man, it is not needed to talk about integration.” (“天人本无异，不必言合。”)

Dissociation of man from Heaven

Theorically speaking, what Cheng’s brothers said was correct, but the reality is, the practice of IOHAM and the means to achieve IOHAM has long been forgotten. The “advancement” of human civilization and modernization of science and technology overshadowed the true nature of man. Man becomes more and more dissociated from his surroundings and the universe (heaven or God). In fact, modern man becomes the prisoner of his inappropriate beliefs and his superstition in modern science and technology. These self-inflicting incarcerations have resulted man into mental, emotional, physical and spiritual confinements, dislodging him completely from the reality and true nature of living.

The external physical form of imprisonment is expressed by tighter and tighter muscular contractions and contractures, resulting in greater and greater limitation of movements and pain and aches in muscles and joints. This explains why the older one gets, the more rigid one experienced and the shorter one becomes. The internal physical imprisonment is expression by chronic ailments such as high blood pressure, diabetes, asthma, arthritis, cancer and so on…The mental and emotional imprisonment is triggered by greed and insecurity, expressed as fear, anger, suppressed anger, grief, resentment, hatred, depression and delusions etc. The spiritual imprisonment is the inability of man to connect himself to the universe or heaven or God…

The essence of Integration of Heaven and Man is to enable one to return to (true) nature (回归自然). The aim of IOHAM is to release one from one’s prison cell, allowing one to return to simplicity and go back to the origin – the real you (反朴归真).

The Origin of This IOHAM

The IOHAM that I am going to show you below might not be the exact form of IOHAM that Daoist monks and hermits had practiced in the past. This IOHAM may be considered as my personal actualization and realization based on everything that I have learned in the past 50+ years. It is the summation of Eastern and Western wisdoms including Daoism, Christianity, Buddhism, “Dao De Jing”, Tai Chi and Xing Yi boxing, meditation, visualization, positive thinking, hypnosis, naturopathy, chiropractic, homeopathy, Traditional Chinese medicine, conventional medical science, chemistry and physics, the law of attraction, “What the “Beep” do we know?”, “The Science of Great Wisdom” (大智慧学术), Quantum Touch, Reconnective Healing, the stories (case histories) of all the patients that I have treated and all extraordinary incidences that I have encountered including my near death experience so on and so forth… All the above and more have provided me with insights into the key to ignite and maintain the fire (universal energy) of Integration of Heaven and Man.

Prerequisite for successful IOHAM

The procedures described below are easy to do. Everyone can integrate with the universal energy within 15 to 30 seconds and obtain successful results with IOHAM regardless of ones religious beliefs, professional backgrounds, skeptics or believers. However, in order to ignite the fire of IOHAM successfully, you have to momentarily desert your biased opinion on true and false, right and wrong.

According to Oxford dictionary, the definition of Science is described as “The intellectual and practical activity encompassing the systematic study of the structure and behavior of the physical and natural world through observation and experiment”. When you can stay neutral at all time and act as an objective observer and experimenter while performing IOHAM, you have opened the door allowing yourself to glimpse and experience a much larger dimension of possibilities that you have never seen and experienced before.

Similarly, this IOHAM that I shall be describing below should not be considered as the final version of IOHAM, The performance of IOHAM should be considered as a scientific experiment. All participants can contribute to make appropriate changes to perfect the procedures of IOHAM within the framework of science.

How to Integrate with Heaven?

Setup, Heal & Help Thyself

Stand with knees bending mildly, raise hands up to about middle of trunk with fingers mildly stretched and palms facing at about 15cm to 20cm apart. You may also put your hands in other positions, but the above is the simplest and easiest position to ignite the connection with the universal energy.
Chì Zĭ Zhī Xīn (赤子之心), meaning to let go you belief system and return to child-like purity, allowing yourself to observe and feel changes without making any judgment.
Xū Huái Ruò Gǔ (虚怀若谷)，meaning to be extremely humble and modest. You are the channel, the observer and the receiver, not the healer. Let go your ego. When you can do this, the universal energy (God, information etc.) will connect with you and you will feel the energy as tingling, electricity, cold air, warmth, pressure, pressure etc. in between your palms or throughout your body.
Identify your intention. Your intention may be helping others to heal, channeling universal energy (information) to heal yourself, practice internal martial art such as Tai Chi, Xing Yi (形意拳) or others. Intention is the first step to actualization. Just think briefly once, never force an idea. (“What is expected; tends to be realized.” Don Spencer, hypnotist.[9])
Smile***** Smile is the first step to let go your tension, to get rid of your negative emotions and to release your contracted muscles. It is the key to unlock the door of prison cell that you have created and allow you to conjugate with the heavenly energy. (The magical spell that open the door to the gateway of Heaven)

N.B. Smile at all time, turn it into a habit.

Healing others:

Have the person to be treated lie down on his/her back, with arms on the side and eyes closed. If it is not convenience for the person to lie down, have the person to sit down with eyes closed.
Put your palms approximately 15 cm above the body of person to be treated. Feel the energy of the person to be treated. The sensation is same as 4 above.
When you can feel the energy, you become the channel connecting the universal energy to the person you are treating.
Move your hand around to different parts of the person, again 15cm or further away from the person. Feel the energy and play with the energy, at the same time observe changes in sensation. When you become proficient with this, your arms will move involuntary by the energy. This is a natural state; do not force this to happen. Whatever will be will be.

10. Go slow with your movement. Relax your arms and shoulders. The more relax you become, the better you can feel. (Smile)

11. Observe responses from the person being treated, i.e. REM (rapid eye movements), blinking of eyes, twitches of fingers or toes, involuntary movement of arms or legs, changes of skin color, changes of breathing pattern, laughing, crying, swallowing, rotation of head, sweating etc. When you see any of the above, you know that the person is responding to the healing process of the universal energy. However, occasionally you may not see any of the above at all.

12. Continue playing with the energy for a while. You decide when it is appropriate to stop. When you have finished, ask the person to open his/her eyes. Ask how he/she feels. Inquire if he/she has seen colors, felt tingling, pressure, electricity etc. during the process of integration.

13. You may want to repeat the integration process when needed.

Daily practice:

14. To improve your effectiveness of healing others, improve your health or getting what you want in life, you have to increase the volume and fluency of flow of universal energy into your body during the integration process. Practice 1,2,3,4 & 5 daily for 10-30 minutes in private or at a place and time that you think is appropriate for you. You may also place your arms in the other positions like the ones that I have demonstrated near the end of video 115 or at other positions that will work for you.

Self-healing

15. Other than using daily practice to treat yourself, you may treat yourself by placing your hands directly over the affected region or regions of your body as soon as you become engaged with the universal energy. Similarly, you may stand in front of a mirror and move your hands over your image in the mirror. The effect is the same.

Distance healing:

16. Do 1,2,3,4 & 5.

17. Think of the person to be treated once, but don’t think too hard. Remember never force any thinking. After you have identified your intention, you have connected the universal energy to the person to be treated.

18. Move your hands around to feel the energy and play with the energy similar to treating the person in close proximity that I have described above.

Group healing

19. You can perform the integration with a group of people in the same location or at different locations. Group performance may be more effective than doing it all by yourself.

N.B. Just do the job. Make sure that you do not allow your ego to creep in. Don’t take any credit for “your” successes in healing. Be humble and childlike. Remember, you are only the channel. Apart, it is very important to stay objective. Don’t try to look for any sensation or force any sensation to appear. You are only an observer. Last but not lease, Keep on SMILING.

To summarize: 1. Identify your intention

2. Remove your biased opinions = return to purity of a child

3. Smile.

4. Be a receiver (channel) and observer

5. Feel the energy and play with the energy
